NYU CAPSTONE FACULTY– ROBERT F. WAGNER GRADUATE SCHOOL OF PUBIC SERVICE (2011-2012)
Kei Hayashi teaches one of the two Planning Capstone Courses for the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. In 2012, she oversaw a team of graduate students working with the New York City Department of Sanitation in the design and implementation of a survey instrument that was used to collect data on consumer/user knowledge and perceptions regarding plastics recycling. The Department of Sanitation had identified a low diversion rate for plastics recycling as was seeking to better identify and analyze the causes. The survey was implemented via email and resulted in over 800 responses. Analysis yielded several key areas on which the Department of Sanitation could focus to improve the understanding of plastics recycling, including improved organization of the Department’s website information regarding recycling as well as better education and outreach related to which plastics are actually recyclable in New York City.
