Multifamily Flood Insurance Affordability Study

BJH collected and analyzed flood insurance data as a part of a New York City sponsored study on insurance take-up rates and coverages for multifamily and mixed-use buildings in high-risk floodplain areas of the City. The study also included quantification of damage from historic events in the floodplain, comparing pre- and Superstorm Sandy damage data. The analysis included take-up rate findings by building typology and by insurance type (public or National Flood Insurance Program and private). Finally, the data collection tool captured information around building owner perceptions of future flood risk and attitudes towards investing in mitigation, which was used to inform a broad set of recommendation related to NFIP and the insurance /risk management landscape more generally.
