BJH was a member of the award-winning Team Skyway River Loop submission in the 2019 New York State Buffalo Corridor Competition. Led by Marvel Architects, the Team placed second in a field of over 100 submissions that proposed new visions for Buffalo’s current Skyway Corridor – an iconic but aging elevated highway segment that dominates the city’s waterfront. The Team envisioned keeping the Skyway and adding new street-level greenway and access features to reframe the entire system for new use. The Skyway River Loop submission called for new local bridge connections between the Inner and Outer Harbor at Michigan Avenue and at Ohio Street near the southern terminus of the City Ship Canal, thereby linking existing waterfront neighborhoods together while also supporting their further development and use. In addition to new and repurposed public amenity space, the proposal envisioned transforming part of the project area with new commercial development. BJH provided market research, an assessment of potential economic impacts from redevelopment pursuant to the Team’s vision, possible funding strategies, and high-level cost estimates to support the proposal.
